Despite Malta’s ultra small size as a country, each of neighborhood/area of the island still feels unique. As you plan your trip, choosing the best place to stay in Malta requires careful consideration for the perfect trip. Different areas of the country feel very different, leaving you questioning where to stay. Without going to a destination, it can be tough to truly get a feel for a neighborhood just by research. During my time spent exploring the beautiful island of Malta, one area stood out to me as the best spot to stay: Valletta. Valletta, also known as Malta’s capital city, offers the most for visitors to make the most out their trip to Malta (especially for first-time visitors).

Why are Americans suddenly flying halfway across the world for THIS island instead of Florida? 🇲🇹✈️ Delta is now adding limited nonstop options from the U.S., making this once “far away” destination more accessible than ever. Crystal-clear water, ancient cities, English-speaking locals, and a mix of Europe + island life… but most Americans still haven’t considered it. Would you choose Malta over a Florida or Caribbean trip? #Malta #VisitMalta #EuropeTravel #TravelTok #internationaltravel

Staying in Malta’s capital city, Valletta, is an obvious choice for first time visitors. Here’s why:

  • The historic heart of Malta: Surrounded by the true Malta feel with fortified walls, architecture, and walkable to major historical landmarks.
  • Access to the Harbor area: From the harbor area, you can take a ferry to Sliema, the Three Cities, or do Grand Harbour boat tours.
  • History: Staying in the city’s capital means you can truly immerse yourself in learning about this UNESCO World Heritage Capital.
  • Walkability: Public transportation in Malta isn’t the best and can be extremely time-consuming. Being able to walk everywhere is so much more efficient (and gives you a better feel for the area). Malta’s streets are very easy to navigate for first time visitors.
  • Ambiance: I love the ambiance of the Valletta area. There’s something so special about it — especially as the streets get filled up at night. There’s a good mix here of residential homes, businesses, restaurants, bars, etc. We stayed at The Phoenicia Malta, leaving us just an easy ten-minute walk away from everything Valletta has to offer.
