Best Activities in Kauai: 6 Memorable Things to Do

I’ll probably never stop talking about Kauai. Out of all the places I’ve traveled, Kauai holds a special place in my heart. It truly has a beauty and peacefulness that’s unlike anywhere else. The true magic of Kauai is almost hard to explain until you go there yourself (all the more reason you need to go).

Even though the natural beauty is enough of a reason to visit the island of Kauai, Hawaii alone, there’s also a huge list of amazing activities that make it an attractive travel destination. From tubing down an old sugar plantation irrigation canal to learning to make local foods, I believe there’s more to a trip here than just visiting the beaches alone.

The best activities in Kauai are the ones that teach you something about the place itself (and help you appreciate why it’s so special). Below, browse my recommendations of the 6 best activities in Kauai for the most memorable trip. Let’s make your trip as perfect as mine was.

1. Kauai Coffee Farm Tour

I’m a coffee fanatic — but you don’t have to be a coffee lover to enjoy a tour of Kauai Coffee Company. Visitors can stop by any time to do a self-guided walking tour for free (takes about 45 minutes). Kauai Coffee is one of the most recognized Hawaii coffee brands, with over 4 million coffee trees on their property.

The self-guided tour starts at their gift shop and takes you through the entire process of how coffee beans are grown, processed, roasted, and packaged. Even my husband, Matt, enjoyed this tour (and he despises coffee). Once you’re done with the Kauai Coffee farm tour, you can stop in the gift shop to get free samples of different roasts and flavors.

Why I love this tour:

  • Great way to learn about how coffee is made
  • Fun, free, and not very time consuming (not many things in life are still free)
  • Kauai Coffee is very important to the people of Kauai

2. Cooking Kauai Class

I try to participate in a cooking class everywhere I travel. Not only are they fun for anyone, but they give you a chance to try local favorites and learn about food culture. The Corner Store cooking class experience was one of my all-time favorite cooking classes, which involves a hands-on experience making foods found in corner stores in Kauai. Together, our class worked to make Somen Salad, Mochi, Ahi Poke Bowls, and Spam Musubi — all classic Kauai foods.

Aletha, the passionate cook and teacher who runs this exceptional class, makes the experience truly memorable. You do not need any prior cooking expertise to enjoy this experience.

Why I love this experience:

  • Great for any type of travelers (solo, couples, friends groups)
  • Delicious food and learning experience
  • One of the best activities in Kauai that is different than other destinations

3. Ko’a Kea Dinner Party

Want to get a true feel for Hawaiian culture? Part of what makes experiencing Kauai so unique for the first time visitor is seeing how welcoming the people can be. One way to do this is to attend a Pa‘ina, or a Hawaiian dinner party or small gathering. You can think of a Pa‘ina as a small dinner event that involves great food, friendly conversation, and lots of celebration.

Attending the dinner Pa‘ina at Ko’a Kea Resort will truly make you fall in love with the island of Kauai. This intimate gathering is hosted on the hotel’s stunning property, overlooking Poipu Beach. Guests are seated all at one table (like at a wedding) to enjoy a multi-course dining experience. You have a chance to bond with strangers (I know this sounds crazy, just hear me out). After just a few hours spent together and lots of delicious food, it felt like the group was truly family.

Note: If you want to participate in this dinner experience, be mindful of the dates as you plan your travel. It is only offered once per month. You do not need to be staying at this hotel to attend the dinner party.

Why I love this experience:

  • Expertly crafted food and cocktail/wine pairings
  • Different every month, so you can do it every time you come to Kauai
  • Great for those seeking the best activities in Kauai that are unique
  • Brings you closer to Hawaiian culture

4.Rum Safari Tour Kauai

I’ll admit that when I first heard “rum safari tour”, I had no idea what this meant. Hear me out though, because the Kauai Safaris rum tour is one of the best activities in Kauai to add to your itinerary. This experience is a two-hour tour that takes you through the 105-acre Kilohana Plantation. Along the way, you see various farm animals and enjoy cocktails made with rum. More importantly, you learn all about the crops grown here and how they are used in the various rums. It’s pretty unique and one of the best activities in Kauai for adults.

Why I love this experience:

  • You don’t know what to expect until you do it
  • Staff that run it make it so fun (and comical)
  • Open-air safari trucks where you can see Kauai’s beauty

5. Kauai ATV Tour

You’ve probably seen this Hawaiian ATV adventure on TikTok a million times (mine included). But remember, things often become trendy for good reason. Before this Kipu Ranch Kauai ATV Tour adventure, I had never been on ATV before. This experience takes you through the massive property where you go through spots where many famous movies were filmed, such as Jurassic Park. Expect to get muddy. You’ll love it.

c

  • Great for individuals of all ages (families can take kids along in passenger seat)
  • Many great photo and video opportunities
  • A blast with mud flying everywhere and very fun to ride/drive in the ATVs

6. Poipu Beach Turtles

Last but not least, we can’t have a complete trip to Kauai without including some wildlife. One of my favorite Kauai activities from my recent trip was seeing the turtles on Poipu Beach. These amazing Hawaiian sea turtles come up on the beach in the evening time. They’re super cute (and so much bigger than they look in the photo). Travelers going to Kauai of any age can enjoy this remarkable experience.

Note: They have this area protected so you will not be able to go up to the turtles directly. However, you can still enjoy seeing them from a distance. Plan to be there around 5 to 6 p.m. for the best chances of seeing this incredible wildlife sighting.

Why I love this experience:

  • Adorable turtles make Kauai even more beautiful
  • Stunning sights
  • Chance to check out Poipu Beach for dinner
